What is Diriyah Tennis Cup?
The Diriyah Tennis Cup is the first international tennis tournament held in oil-rich Saudi Arabia. The multi-million dollar event, with a prize fund of $3 million, will include eight men’s tour players. It is part of the country’s effort to position itself as a global athletic superpower. Just last week, Anthony Joshua faced Andy Ruiz in a heavyweight battle in Saudi Arabia.
Where is it being shown?
The tennis players will make an appearance in Diriyah. It is a town situated north-west of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital. The competition is held at the newly constructed Diriyah Arena, which has a 10,000 square meter area. It took just two months to construct and has a capacity of up to 15,000 people. It is the same location as Joshua’s ‘clash of the dunes’ boxing battle last weekend.
Who is involved?
Organisers have done exceedingly well in attracting top personalities to the location for a fresh new event. Stan Wawrinka is the only past grand slam champion competing. He is not, however, the top rated player in the field.
