Team USA Basketball
Team USA Basketball is on the verge of losing a spot in the FIBA World Cup 2023. With a victory over Brazil in Washington on Friday, the United States can seal a spot in next year’s World Cup. Jim Boylen hasn’t given much thought to how the World Cup qualifying rankings would look following USA Basketball’s game against Brazil on Friday. He’s only thinking about how the Americans still have four qualifying games remaining.
“And in my head, I’m behaving like we have to win four to get in,” Boylen said.
He knows otherwise. The Team USA Basketball (7-1 in qualification) can seal a spot in next year’s World Cup with a victory against Brazil (5-3) in Washington on Friday. On Veterans Day, the national team will march through the nation’s capital, hoping to secure one of the 32 seats in the event, which will be held in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia next summer. Qualifying for the United States began about a year ago, in late November. It began in April 2021 for certain teams in the FIBA Americas area.

It’s been a long ride, but Boylen and the Americans are almost there.
“It’s never easy,” said Boylen, who has coached the last eight U.S. qualifying games, which have all been staged in two-game periods with a new squad each time. “Be prepared for the unexpected.” Expect to make changes. Team USA Basketball you simply go with the flow and keep it easy. I feel we must be better on the defensive end of the field. You hope for shots to fall, but we must defend and rebound. That’s what we have control over.”
The World Cup is the most straightforward route for teams to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. In qualifying games, the Americans have mostly chosen G League players, knowing that elite NBA players would take their roster positions in the World Cup and Olympics.
“It’s incredibly humbling when we have repeat players who say, ‘Yeah, Coach, I enjoyed it and I want to be a part of it,'” Boylen said. “It’s quite difficult. It’s an almost thankless profession. Nobody speaks about it when we win, but when we lose, it’s all over the news. But I don’t sell it that way. I sell it because 293 men have worn the senior men’s national jersey in the past 30 years. They are among the most elite set of players in the game’s history. People aren’t aware of this.”
So far in the qualifying campaign, the Americans have utilized 37 different players for the Team USA Basketball. Only five players on the rosters for both the Brazil game and Monday’s game against Colombia have competed in 2023 qualification.
Langston Galloway, DaQuan Jeffries, David Stockton, Will Davis II, and Michael Frazier II have all previously played for the United States in this qualifying cycle, with Galloway having made the most appearances with six. Charlie Brown Jr., Chris Chiozza, Rodney Hood, Alize Johnson, Elijah Pemberton, Henry Sims, and Craig Sword round out the cast. There are 12 teams from the Americas area left, divided into two groups of six, contending for seven World Cup berths.
The United States leads their qualifying group (Group F) by two games with four games left on the calendar; the last two-game qualification window is in February for the Team USA Basketball. Brazil, Mexico, and Uruguay all have 5-3 records; Puerto Rico has a 4-4 record, while Colombia has a 3-5 record.
On Thursday night, Canada defeated Venezuela 94-56 to become the first Americas area team to secure a World Cup spot; the Canadians top Group E at 9-0, followed by Venezuela (7-2), the Dominican Republic (6-3), Argentina (6-3), Panama (2-6) and the Bahamas (2-6). (2-6). On Thursday, the Dominican Republic defeated Argentina 80-69.
World Cup bids will be awarded to the top three teams in each Americas area group, as well as the best fourth-place team. The Team USA Basketball World Cup draw is held in March in Manila, and the competition spans from late August through mid-September.
